Opera Nuda

Nudes, a heretofore unknown aspect of Keith Carter’s work.

“Photography always seemed to me a kind of benign magic. Light, precious metals, mysterious chemistry . . . wield the camera like a magic wand, murmur a few hopeful words . . . and on a good day you can conjure up proof of a dream.”

— Keith Carter

Keith Carter is an internationally recognized photographer and educator. He holds the endowed Walles Chair of Art at Lamar University in his hometown of Beaumont, Texas. In 1998 he received the University Professor Award and the Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award. He is the recipient of the Lange/Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and two Regional Survey Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

In addition, he has been the subject of a profile on the national network television show, CBS Sunday Morning. His haunting and enigmatic photographs have been shown in over ninety solo exhibitions in thirteen countries. His publications include eight monographs and his photographs are in permanent collections across the country, including the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Wittliff Collection of Southwestern and Mexican Photography, Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas.
