Marilyn Bridges

Unknown work from a master of aerial photography.

“ . . . ancient monuments and abandoned ruins whose builders once yearned to conquer eternity. . . . ephemeral forms so delicate as to last only a moment.”

—Marilyn Bridges

Marilyn Bridges’ photographic quest began with a flight in a small aircraft to see the gigantic and mysterious Nazca Lines of Peru. She then entered the Rochester Institute of Technology where she received an MFA for her thesis on aerial photography.

Her photographs above ancient and contemporary sites have been featured in over 300 exhibitions and are in over 100 collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Seven books of her work have been published, including Markings: Aerial Views of Sacred Landscapes, Planet Peru: An Aerial Journey Through a Timeless Land, Egypt: Antiquities from Above, and This Land is Your Land.

Her photographs have also appeared in major periodicals, including Life, Vanity Fair, and The New York Times. She has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, a Fulbright Scholarship, and the 2003 Wings Trust Award for “Courage and Artistic Excellence.” She is a licensed pilot and a Fellow of the Explorers Club.
